According to the 1891 Census for Margate, Kent, Alfred lived with his family at 5 Hawley Street, Margate, Kent in England. He was 64 years old at the time of the Census and his occupation was Foreman Fish Poulterer. The Census indicated that he was born at
Westbere, Sturry, Kent', and was the head of the household, which contained four residents including his wife Harriet; son Henry Edwin Gurney, then single and aged 23 and a Domestic Servant, Ellen Brockman, who was single and aged 16 years - she was born at Margate, Kent.
